Grant Hogan, BCom (Hons) (Economics and Finance) | CEO & Executive Director, Portfolio Manager

Grant is the Co-founder, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Independent Alternatives. Grant is responsible for the management of the business, as well as managing portfolios and developing investment research systems.

Grant has more than 11 years investment management experience and has a strong background in the management of hedge funds and long only strategies, in particular fixed income strategies.

He occupied senior positions as a portfolio manager and member of the investment committee at a leading investment management firm, where he co-managed more than R4.5 billion in hedge funds strategies. He has a strong quantitative background and gained valuable experience operating in sophisticated investment environments. This experience, coupled with his knowledge of data science, enables him to develop and implement innovative investment strategies across long-only and hedge fund portfolios.

Grant is an award-winning investment manager, having been recognised on several occasions for delivering outstanding investment performance. He brings with him more than a decade of financial market experience, with the last five years focused on absolute return and hedge fund strategies – strategies that delivered robust investment performance through various market cycles. He also brings valuable programming skills to the team, along with experience in quantitative risk management, derivative pricing and portfolio optimisation. Grant is a FAIS approved key individual and representative for discretionary investment portfolios, including hedge funds.

 

 

 

Tatenda Chapinduka, BBusSci (Actuarial Science), CAIA | CIO & Executive Director, Portfolio Manager

Tatenda is the Co-founder, Executive Director and Chief Investment Officer of Independent Alternatives. Tatenda is jointly responsible for the management of the business, the management of portfolios, as well as developing investment research systems and the management of clients.

Tatenda’s experience, gained from his current and past roles, encompasses most asset classes. He has traded in spot equities, equity and index derivatives, fixed income products, commodity derivatives and foreign currency product markets. He is skilled in statistical macro-thematic and asset-class modelling, including the use of machine learning and data science methods to model financial markets. He was a senior portfolio manager and analyst at a leading investment management firm from March 2010 to December 2015.

Tatenda is experienced in managing alternative investments, having previously co-managed R4.5 billion across equity, agricultural commodities, fixed income and multi-strategy hedge fund products. He has sat on numerous hedge fund industry panels and has been featured on CNBC Africa. Tatenda is currently a member of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA)’s Alternative Investments Committee, where he heads up the hedge fund stream. Tatenda is a FAIS approved key individual and representative for discretionary investment portfolios, including hedge funds.

 

 

Otshepeng Sokhela, Bsc (Mathematics and Actuarial Science), Independent Non Executive Director

Otshepeng is an independent non-executive director on the board. Otshepeng has over a decade of diverse experience in the financial services industry. Throughout this period she occupied various roles in employee benefits, asset management and insurance industries. She began her career in actuarial consulting, and latter branched into investment risk management and portfolio management. She is the CEO of Oats Risk Services, a disruptive risk insurance solutions provider.

 

 

 

 

 

Lufuno Makhari, BBusSci (Finance), Independent Non Executive Director

Lufuno is an independent non-executive director on the board. Lufuno has a background in investment banking and private equity having worked at Nedbank Capital and Phembani Group. He is a co-founder and the Managing Director of Chase Willow Capital, a Pan African private equity firm.
